Sugar Loaf Horses

At the tail end of last year (no pun intended), the marketing department at my place of work announced a photo competition open to employees across our global offices. Being a bit of a keen shutterfreak I grabbed my DSLR and sped off toward County Wicklow, wife and mutt in tow, to see what I could capture of Ireland. A wonderful, emerald jewel in the European crown. Studded with crustations of austerity and liberal quantities of thick, yeasty stout!

I submitted a couple of photos to the competition and actually ended up having one of my photos selected as a winning entry. Along with 11 other entries from other employees, our photos would make up the new comapny calendar for 2014 along with a credit to the winning photographers on each page.

This is the entry that was chosen from my submissions, a scenic photo of two horses on the ‘Sugar Loaf‘. A famous hill in County Wicklow.

Sugar Loaf Horses
My winning entry. Two horses at The Sugar Loaf, Co. Wicklow.

Being a complete beginner at photography, I don’t have much invested in it aside from a stock Nikon D3100, an 18-55 VR lens, an external flash and a couple of UV filters. Having this photo chosen as a winning entry though has spurred me on to delve deeper in to photography. Perhaps in 2014 I will look to purchase a new lens to add to the 18-55 one I’ve had for a couple of years now.

Incidentally, on my previous visit to the Sugar Loaf, I made a short video about the journey to the summit. On a Summer day the views can be quite spectacular, anyone visiting the area I encourage to make the climb!
